Uploading a recruitment video is not always plain sailing

I’ve been trying to upload videos direct to the blog for a couple of days now without much luck. In fact I think I’m going to admit defeat for now - work to do and all that. I have just discovered a quick fix though. It’s a cheat but you can simply upload the video onto Youtube or Dailymotion etc and then embed a link into the blog - as I’ve done here.

The reason for all this is that I want to show off some of the recruitment videos we’ve produced recently. So, now I have my quick fix here’s one of the recruitment videos we shot for inclusion on the recently launched careers website for The Yachts of Seabourn.

I’m sure we’ll be talking more about the importance of video for recruitment purposes in the coming months but one thing to point out about the videos on www.seabourncareers.com is that after the careers themselves the videos are the most viewed area of the website (Google analytics in action). Who wants to read a mission statement when you can watch and listen to Irini or Andre and learn exactly what working life is like on board Seabourn Pride?

What’s up docx?

PC and Macs are just like account handlers and creatives really, they should be able to understand each other and communicate nicely but sometimes it’s like they’re from completely different planets.

For instance us creatives don’t need to go near a PC or use Word other than for opening word docs for a quick cut and paste job. But Microsoft have even made that a pain recently. In recent months account handlers and clients have started sending me docx files. Now, whatever they are macs don’t like them one bit.

Thankfully there’s a fix now, Micosoft have released a format converter that opens these weird files as plain old word docs. But, good luck finding it on the Microsoft website. You can download it here from Mindplunge though (what a great name for a website).

Tweet. Tweet.

Tweet. Twitter. Social networking. Mini-blogging. Updates. Even if you haven’t logged into the Twitter revolution yet, you’re bound to have heard people talking about it. And talking (in text of 140 characters or less) is what Twitter is all about. Communicating with a circle of friends (known as Followers) that you can manage – for example, you can follow someone, and they can follow you. If you are following them, you’ll see their Tweets, which are their short messages, which you can access online or have sent to your mobile, if they are following you they will see your updates, which you can write on the twitter site or via your phone/Blackberry. It’s a great way of communicating quickly and concisely to the people who matter. And, with TwitterJobSearch.com now up and running, it’s increasingly being used for recruitment communication purposes.

And the winner is…

Our website, 360inspire.com has won a fantastic design award, of which we’re rather proud.

The website www.coolhomepages.com showcases sites that are unique, brilliantly designed and are also user friendly in their functionality. They particularly praise pages that they feel are a bit special – the ones that really stand out.

Our own site has been included in the Corporate, Flash, Layouts and Very Clean categories. Great stuff.

See for yourself at www.360inspire.com and rate our site at www.coolhomepages.com.

We’re busy patting ourselves on the back now. But not for too long, as we want to get cracking on more exciting projects. Watch this space.

360-education

The new 360 Education website is live. You can view it at 360education.co.uk.

You’ll see there’s only a holding page there at the moment. This is because we wanted to start building a web presence for 360 Education as soon as possible but could not afford to wait until the whole website was designed and written. This holding page is actually the first live page of a complete website built using a CMS (Content Managed System).

This means that as soon as new content is ready we can start adding in extra pages ourselves - the CMS will allow us to add menus, sub menus and as many pages as we want.

360 Education and 360 Intouch

As well as this blog we’re also working on developing websites for our new education arm - www.360education.co.uk - and our brand new social networking tool, Intouch - www.360intouch.com.

Both of these sites have a blog functionality too so in the coming months we’re all going to be going a bit blog crazy I fear.

I, for one, am going to have to brush up on my spelling and punctuation. Still at least people won’t have to put up with my hand-writing - which according to my six year son is ‘terrible’. And he’s being kind there really.

Nearly there

Haven’t really done much to the blog this week - work gets in way sometimes.

I just need to figure how we can upload different media now. I want to be able to showcase the videos we’ve worked on in the past (employer branding style podcasts for www.seabourncareers.com for example) rather than linking out to the various sites where they live. I also want to have downoadable PDFs brochures and case studies etc. So once that’s sorted out then this site will be ‘live’ I guess.

UPDATE: Well, that was easy. Google is a wondeful thing, rather than figure out how to add a ‘download pdf’ link myself I just Googled it and found this very handy video tutorial on this guys blog www.reverbstudios.ie. Now I just need to find out how he made that video tutorial…

Getting there

I’ve added in some initial content on the site pages now. These will need updating and editing to make them as SEO friendly as possible.

Most of the links are done now. I decided to have the links open in a new window rather than a new frame. That way the 360 recruitment advertising blog will stay open even if people navigate away for a look at the websites we’ve designed etc.

The other thing I added today is the contact form (you’ll notice this particular link should open in the same window as it’s an internal link). Pretty nifty though, the plugin is called ‘easy contacts’ and it should help deflect the Russian viagra spam. Plugin is one word don’t you know, no hyphens or spaces. Same as login. And noggin.

And I’ve just added a ‘Favicon’ - the little icon you can see nest to the web address in the address panel of your browser. You might not be impressed by this but it took longer than you might think. Did it here in the end… www.genfavicon.com

Blog off

The blog is being built using Wordpress. Wordpress is great actually. You should stop reading this and check it out. There’s a link to Wordpress under the heading Blogroll on the left (or right if I change my mind again). Not sure why links are under the heading Blogroll yet. But I’ll work it out I’m sure. After I’ve worked out what colour the logo should be and what I’m going to replace the flowers with…

Did you know you can change the brush size in photoshop by ‘toggling’ the square brackets? Did you?
